Cocoon wins 'Obal roku' awards

Cocoon’s design of Haslerky Herbal (Nestle Cesko) and Hello Juices (Linea Nivnice) were recently honored with certificates at Obal Roku (Packaging of the Year), an annual event honoring the best of Czech packaging. Both designs are the result of strategic re-positioning work involving the strategic teams and designers which led to focused, effective design work completed in our Prague offices.

Igor Volgin’s Master Class

Focusing on whether development of great brand identities are driven by creativity or craft, Cocoon Moscow’s creative director Igor Volgin on April 13 presented to marketing and advertising students at the prestigious Moscow school. The class was divided between theory as well as practical exercises in analyzing and developing packaging to optimize brand identity effectiveness. In all, the students were very impressed with the day’s activities, citing the practical knowledge and exercises as being the extremely helpful.

On May 21, Douglas Kaufman, Head of Strategy at Cocoon, gave an hourlong presentation to branding professionals from across a wide array of categories at the prestigious ‘Brand Activity’ event in Bucharest. His presentation, entitled ‘Branding in Recession: A survival guide’ was extremely well received and went to the heart of what brands need to focus on in this tough economic climate. We are currently working on creating a workshop out of this presentation to run with our clients. New Pack for Joe Bro

The new packaging design features the brand mascot, Joe Bro, interacting with and encouraging consumers with fun activities. Further, communication on the pack was supported with a dedicated TV commercial and other modern communications (ie. The internet) in order to reach its target audience of 11 to 14 year old Romanian children.

Syba...the Art of Packaging

On April 17, Douglas Kaufman and Vedrana Ajdin presented at the Art of Packaging conference given jointly by Syba and the Dutch Embassy. In addition to presenting at the event, Douglas also moderated the day. Douglas presented ‘5 Steps to consider before you begin your packaging design’ which covered the topic of making sure you have a proper brand identity before you brief your creatives, while Vedrana focused her presentation on ‘Adding Value through packaging design’ and showed some amazing case studies and tools which can save clients money and help spur sales growth. Among the guests at the event was the Dutch Ambassador to the Czech Republic, Jan Lucas van Hoorn, who was there to promote cooperation between Dutch and Czech companies through innovation and great design. All in all, a great day where we met some amazing designers from both the Czech Republic and the Netherlands.

The La Fantana brand stands for more than just water! This brand stands for prompt delivery, trustfulness, quality service, and a friendly attitude toward customers. The new Visual ID of a water butterfly, designed by our Romanian office, carries all of those attributes and also gives the brand a some personality and a positive touch.

We've moved!

Cocoon has recently moved into our new offices with Flex/Cocoon, Silk, and Silk Mockups. This move reflects the tremendous growth we’ve had over the last few years. We’re still moving it and getting settled, but we will be sure to figure out a reason to get everyone to come and visit as soon as we do.

New Logo for Riga

In the months of October and November, Douglas traveled to Riga where he was invited by the Riga City Council to consult on the visual identity of the city. In this capacity he was a ‘visiting expert’, conducting workshops and advising the City Council on selecting a new logo from several which were submitted in a country-wide competition. It seems this project will continue through 2009, so we will try to keep everyone updated on the progress of our chilly neighbor to the north.

The Petra Slims packaging was recognized in the prestigious Obal Roku (Packaging of the Year) awards in the Czech Republic. This decidedly feminine brand was intended as an accessory and presented several unique challenges and opportunities for innovative use of materials and structural design. We congratulate the team on this recognition! Also winning an award was Orion Draze for best use of materials (submitted by the printer, OTK Group). Cocoon created this design and advised on print techniques and materials. We congratulate OTK as well.

End of year Successes

To end the year on a positive note, Cocoon is pleased to announce a number of new partnerships as well as the extension of several others. Projects for new clients Bellinda (hosiery) and Eta (home appliances) are underway in the Czech Republic as well as new projects for Coca Cola in Russia and P&G on a regional level. We see these new projects from our existing clients as proof positive that our methods and our creative work are appreciated and that we are, indeed, helping our clients grow their brands.

7 Steps to a better brand identity

7 Steps to a Better Brand Identity focuses on the need for creative agencies to collaborate more in the creation of brands and puts forward a process designed to get the best work from creative agencies. The presentation was first given in Stockholm at Marcus Evans’ Visual Identity Design conference in late September. Douglas later gave the presentation in the prestigious Strategic Branding Forum in Bucharest. Based on the response from this, he has been invited to Riga to give this presentation and conduct a workshop at their seminar entitled The Visual Identity.

Newest Uncover event

Every so often, Cocoon holds an event which we call Uncover as a forum to learn new things and share ideas in a casual setting. To these events, we invite a range of guests including our own team, friends, and clients. Some may recall that in the past, we have had Jean Noel Kapferer speak about the future of strategic branding. We also had Vincenzo Ciummo of PRS International give a very interesting presentation on the latest eye-tracking technologies. On the morning of October 24, Ivo Grupping of BR-ND People will pay us a visit to demonstrate new techniques and methodologies in the science (art) of brand naming. This will be a breakfast session which will run from 9am to 11am. The final location is to be decided. If anyone would like more information on this event or an invitation, contact Douglas Kaufman.

Bonaqua Viva’s outdoor advertising campaign is being featured in the July issue of Reklama’s ‘Best 10’ list of outdoor advertising campaigns. As the name implies, this list features the best new outdoor campaigns in and around Moscow and Russia. The campaign features Visual Identity work which was conceived, developed, and executed by the Cocoon Moscow team. Nice work guys!
