In the forest, only the tallest trees get the full benefit of the sun and rainfall. The rest shrink away or cling to the forest floor. A tree that decides this year that it has 'grown enough' very soon finds that it has been overtaken by its neighbors and now, starved of light, it too begins to fade away. Growth is not a luxury or an extra. It is a necessity for survival.
